New Valkyria Chronicles Game may be Announced in 2017

A new entry in Sega’s Valkyria Chronicles series may be announced in 2017, despite the first spin-off title, Valkyria Revolution, having yet to launch in Japan and only recently being confirmed for a Western release.

Speaking as part of a recent interview with 4Gamer, Takeshi Ozawa, the director of Valkyria Chronicles IIIII, and Valkyria Revolution, mentioned that he hopes that the new title will expand the reach of the new IP, before adding that he “hope[s] to be able to tell [fans] something new in 2017.” Meanwhile, in a separate interview with the Japanese PlayStation Blog (via Dualshockers), Ozawa and series producer Youichi Shimosato stated that Valkyria Revolution is not necessarily a replacement for the Chronicles subseries.

Ozawa compared the split franchise to Atlus’s Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, where the two sub-series share elements but the stories and gameplay are fundamentally different. Similarly, Chronicles and Revolution are tied through their distinct visual style and the theme of ‘war drama’, but feature different worlds, characters, and gameplay.

Although neither Shimasoto nor Ozawa confirm that a new Valkyria Chronicles game is in production, Shimasoto promises that the series does not end with Revolution. Furthermore, various pitches related to the continuation of the IP have been put forward since the release of the third game in 2011,  but have not gone ahead due to issues with “timing”. While these statements do not necessarily indicate that another title is already in the works, they do point to the possibility as a likelihood.

The Valkyria IP began with the turn-based strategy game, Valkyria Chronicles, on the PlayStation 3 (later released on PC and PlayStation 4), with its sequels releasing exclusively on the PlayStation Portable. The next entry, Valkyria Revolution, is an action/strategy RPG, featuring an entirely new setting, set to be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime in 2017.
