Torment: Tides of Numenera Release Date Set

Torment: Tides of Numenera

InXile Entertainment’s Torment: Tides of Numenera, the spiritual successor to the highly-acclaimed RPG Planescape: Torment, finally has a release date of February 28, 2017.

The game first came to public attention back in 2013 with one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns to date, earning more than $1,000,000 in under seven hours. Part of that success came from the high expectations surrounding another InXile project, Wasteland 2. At the time of the campaign, Torment: Tides of Numenera was set to release in December 2014, but development has, clearly, been much slower than anticipated.

Despite these apparent issues, and comments by key personnel made early in the game’s production about the issues that arise through partnerships with external publishers, Techland signed on to help with localisation and distribution in June 2016. Two months later, the developers announced that the game would be ported to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, in addition to the PC release that had been planned since the beginning.

In more recent times, the developers have set the PR machine into motion with a series of videos introducing some of the character classes available to players.

The game world and ruleset is based on that of the tabletop RPG Numenera, with storytelling being cited as one of the most important elements of the game. To that end, it will include a heavy focus on character interactions, world building, and dialogue depth. More information on the story was revealed alongside the game’s initial announcement.

InXile is also working on Wasteland 3, which, like Torment: Tides of Numenera, will use the Unity game engine, but is expected to release some time in 2019.

The development process of Torment: Tides of Numenera has been protracted, and fans can only hope that the delays have ensured that the game lives up to the high standards set by its almost-twenty year old predecessor.
