Watch_Dogs is a very ambitious new IP from Ubisoft. It is an open-world title with some truly unique elements never before seen in gaming. Ever since its reveal trailer and demo at E3 2012, it has been the talk of the gaming scene. It was the first real next-gen title that was announced, and it will be one of the first to show off the true power of the next generation consoles. Some say it is a modern day Assassin’s Creed, but any way you look at it, this game, which is set to release in the first half of 2014, looks to be one game that truly defines next-gen, which is why it is one of OnlySP’s most anticipated games of the year.
Watch_Dogs was originally announced at E3 2012 for Ps3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. It has since been revealed that it has been made from the ground up on next gen consoles, and best played there. Its scale is massive, taking place in a full-size near future version of Chicago, where everything is controlled by a single security force: ctOS. This means that if one person gets into the system, he or she has access to all information. Creative director Jonathan Morin has said that the game is a “wake up call” for technology users, saying that “Pretty much everything you can do in Watch Dogs is real to an extent… Pretty much everything was based on reality.”
Watch Dogs is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, and it is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious games we’ve seen in a very long time. It has a massive open world, tons of side activities, and much more. However, the game was not ready to be released at its original scheduled release date, so the team decided to delay it to the first half of 2014, saying that the decision to delay it was “very intense”, but that it was “in the best interest of the product.” The game’s budget before the delay was near $70 million, not including marketing, and it has undoubtedly risen since then.
Watch_Dogs is an open world action-adventure game, much like Assassin’s Creed, with many side missions and activities to take part in aside from the main story. You play as Aiden Pearce, who is able to hack into the ctOS, or Central Operation System, and receive information about nearly anything only using his cell phone. This means that, from a distance, you can see information about a person, hack objects, or control cameras from a distance. You can cause havoc in the city by hacking stop lights and causing a huge car pile-up, or you can use your phone to see a potential victim of a crime, tail the victim, and eventually stop the crime.
Each mission, story or side, has many different ways of completing it. You can go in guns blazing, take the stealthy approach, or anything in between, using the power of hacking to your advantage. There is never just one way to complete a mission. There are also many random activities that happen in the world. There may be a crime in progress that Aiden can choose whether or not to intervene . These choices, as well as many others throughout the game, will earn him reputation points. This will cause civilians and other NPCs to act differently to Aiden, according to his reputation status. Shooting and driving are also a big part of the Watch Dogs experience. These will be usable during missions, but never mandatory. At any point, Aiden can activate Focus, which is a slowed-time mode in order for Aiden to combine elements like hacking, driving, and shooting.
Watch Dogs also features an online mode. However, instead of this being a normal competitive multiplayer mode, it resembles Assassin’s Creed’s Manhunt mode. A player is given a contract to find and kill another online player. He then enters the other player’s world and searches for the player, who will appear as a regular civilian to the player whose world is being hacked. This mode will combine the single player and multiplayer experience into one true connected mode. However, it won’t interfere with the story and if the player does not want to use it, it can be disabled.
The story of Watch Dogs revolves around Aiden Pearce, who is an expert hacker and is obsessed with surveillance and control. In the game’s version of Chicago, Aiden’s family have been affected due to the extreme surveillance, and he is out to get revenge on the people who harmed his family so they can’t continue their actions. He becomes a vigilante so that these people cannot continue their actions. His quest for revenge includes his taking over all of the ctOS as well as monitoring his family at all times to ensure their safety.
