Indie developer iNK Stories has announced that 1979 Revolution: Black Friday, a historical adventure game, will be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.

Originally launched for PC and Mac in April 2016, 1979 Revolution tells the story of Reza Shirazi, an aspiring photojournalist who returns to Iran in the middle of the Iranian Revolution. Upon his return, Reza is dragged into the Revolution, and the player must make decisions to determine the narrative.

An Iranian conservative newspaper called the game “pro-Western propaganda” during its development, and accused game director Navid Khonsari (Grand Theft Auto: Vice CityMax Payne) of espionage. Members of the development team used aliases to protect themselves, while some fled Iran due to their involvement with the game. The title was banned in the country upon its release, due to the belief that it would “poison the minds of the youth and young adults […] by means of false and distorted information”.

Following the game’s PC and Mac debut in April 2016, it received several award nominations, including Best Performer at the BAFTA Game Awards and Best Debut at the Game Developers Choice Awards. The title was released on iOS in June 2016, followed by an Android launch in December 2016. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are scheduled for release in spring 2018.
