“I’d Like to Be Considered For More Than Just Being the Token Brown Girl”: RAGE 2 Lead Actress Discusses Tokenism in the Industry

Amanda Miller, the female lead in RAGE 2 (among other major roles in anime and gaming), was gracious enough to share some time during the 2019 Fan Expo Canada to talk about her experiences in the industry.

Miller discussed working with Swedish developer Avalanche Studios as the main female protagonist in RAGE 2. She recorded her lines separately from Sam Riegel, who voices the male counterpart of the character, only occasionally hearing his work for reference.

“I got to create my own version, and that’s what the developer likes; it has a replay value, because we’re both very different personalities.”

The character was initially a “no-nonsense” personality, but eventually evolved to fit Miller’s self-proclaimed “snarky” attitude and humour.

Miller also discussed a trend in voice acting where studios are casting ethnically-specific actors, which is simultaneously a benefit and an annoyance.

“You’re like, ‘Oh, I didn’t get called in because I was good, you just called me in because you need a brown girl’,” said Miller. “That being said, it doesn’t hurt to get auditions, but I’d like to be considered for more than just being the token brown girl.”

“In the grand scheme of things, it’s way more positive than it is negative.”
