PlatinumGames has revealed that its upcoming action title Astral Chain began development as a fantasy game.
In an interview with Polygon, director Takahisa Taura, mentioned that Astral Chain was originally a fantasy game where a player would use magic. He noted that many other games were set in the fantasy realm, and the switch to a cyberpunk genre was because “we wanted to make Astral Chain stand out among other games. And that’s what you see now.”
Taura also said that he was influenced by anime such as Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed. He explained that character designer Masakazu Katsura draws a manga called Zetman, which is another type of science fiction manga. As a result, the environments in the game are reminiscent of the ones in his manga.
In the past, Taura has spoken about how PlatinumGames approaches its development process, as well as how difficult it is to create a new IP. Astral Chain also will provide the intense action combat that the studio is known for with titles such as Bayonetta and Nier: Automata.
Astral Chain is set to launch on August 30, 2019 for Nintendo Switch.
