Aussie Life-Sim Dinkum Will Have ‘Run-Through Narrative’ Instead of Tutorial

In Dinkum, players will learn the ropes by doing rather than being told how to play.

Speaking to OnlySP, the game’s creator and solo developer James Bendon rejected the idea that the player’s introduction will take the form of a traditional tutorial:

“There’s a run-through narrative that will push the player in the right direction, hopefully,” he said. “But it’s still quite open.”

“That really grinds my gears when you want to play a big game and it takes 25 minutes for them to let you play. Especially a lot of RPGs do that, JRPGs too. They let you walk down a hall three steps, then say ‘Oh well, now press this button.’”

Bendon said that, instead, Dinkum’s NPCs will prod the player with hints about what can or should be done.

At the moment, Bendon is also balancing the experience of the first day, including considering pausing time to ensure players do not feel rushed to prepare their settlement. “It probably won’t stay like that,” though, he added.

The full interview will discuss the influence of Animal Crossing on the game, Bendon’s rural upbringing, and much more. Come back tomorrow to read the full chat.
