If you’re a fan of retro gaming and/or speedrunning, you’ll want to check out the Best of NES speedrun Marathon happening live, right now, through November 2nd. The Best of NES is a 24-hour a day annual marathon designed simply to showcase the best (and worst) that the Nintendo Entertainment System has to offer. While featuring a number of races, this is essentially four days of single-player speedruns of retro classics.
Some highlights of opening day are the Ninja Gaiden 1-3 block, followed by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1-3 block. Day one is closed out by the classic Dragon Warrior aka Dragon Quest RPG. Day 2 highlights include a Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out race, a block of Mega Man 1-6, a couple of Castlevania runs, and the first two Wizards and Warriors games. On day 3 look for the under-rated Power Blade series, the original NES Metal Gear games, the Super Mario Bros block, the Contra series and Metroid. Day 4 begins with Dragon Warrior 3 and 4, and closes with Zelda and Zelda II before the marathon switches over to the ‘Worst’ of NES.
Worst of NES, not surprisingly, is populated by several movie or television tie-in games, including: Wayne’s World, Home Alone 2 and Hudson Hawk amongst others. These are terrible games, made fun by being speedran and glitched out whenever possible. Here’s a link to the full schedule.
Best of NES is an excellent way to to see what retro speedrunning is all about, and discover some of the seminal classics of the retro age. It’s also a really good way to discover some of the hidden gems that you may have missed from the industry-saving Nintendo Entertainment System. Check it out on Twitch and let us know which runs you’re looking forward to in the comments below.
