When playing a video game, certainly one of the many things one will look for is the fun factor. In other words, how much fun are you having while playing the game. However, would you ever consider playing a game that isn’t designed to be fun? Beyond: Two Souls, the upcoming PS3 game from Heavy Rain creator David Cage will give you just that chance. In an interview with Edge-Online Cage said:
“I’m not interested in giving players fun. I want to give them meaning; I don’t want to challenge their thumbs, I want to challenge their minds.”
Essentially the idea is to create an emotional bond between the player and the main character, that goes deeper then most stories in games today. While this is certainly a technological challenge, it’s also a challenge from the actors point of view as well. Working with no sets, imagination only and on a limited time frame can certainly be stressful. The initial idea behind Beyond is a response to the death of a loved one, according to Cage and really looks at life and death as a whole.
“Maybe this is irrelevant or just overly ambitious,” he said. “Maybe this is not what most people out there actually want. But this is the goal I set myself with Beyond: To create something different.”
For me personally, if a game has a great story and certainly one I can become sucked into, then I am having a great time regardless of controls. That being said, I certainly want to feel like I’m getting my money’s worth. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comment section below!
