Its news that every Call of Duty fan loves, and every other gamer hates to hear, but we could be on track for the new fastest selling game of all time. To be fair, many were expecting Black Ops 2 to accomplish just that, what with Modern Warfare 3 and the original Black Ops holding both those titles respectively in the past.
In the UK, hundreds of stores opened for the midnight launch across a wide range of retailers, including Blockbuster who represented 450 of those.
Gerry Butler, Commerical Director for Blockbuster said, “It was fantastic to see thousands of people turnout at over 450 Blockbuster stores last night and our staff really getting into the spirit of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.”
Over 10,000 copies of Black Ops 2 were sold in the first five minutes, not including other retailers. Butler continued, “We anticipate that our stores will continue to serve hundreds of COD fans today as the rush continues to get the latest game in this record breaking franchise.”
GAME, another UK retailer that recently saw itself enter, and then saved from administration, opened 319 stores at midnight in preparation for Treyarch’s shooter. Staff were dressed in full combat gear in order to simulate the experiences players could find on the battlefield, although we expect weapon safeties were switched on.
Andrew Reiner, Executive Editor for Game Informer tweeted:
However, Reiner then went on to correct himself by following that tweet with:
Blacks Ops 2 sales estimates are currently pitched at somewhere between 6.5 to 7.2 million for the first 24 hours alone. Modern Warfare 3 currently holds the title of fastest sales for a video game ever with almost 30 million units sold to date.
The future really is Black.
