Borderlands 3 will fit snugly into the series’s timeline by tying off loose threads from previous titles, but it will not be the end to the story.
The franchise’s story has developed with numerous Vault Hunters racing to vaults whilst experiencing monumental twists and turns. Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and The Pre-Sequel! have all delivered gripping stories surrounding the rise and fall of Handsome Jack from ‘code monkey’ to Hyperion CEO, but they have also left many unanswered questions.
In an interview with DualShockers, Borderlands 3 lead writers Danny Homan and Sam Winkler provided some brief details about what players can expect from the upcoming game. Both Homan and Winkler were adamant that the game will not be the end of the franchise.
Winkler explained the story will “tie off some threads, have some new threads, and definitely isn’t the end of Borderlands in any way.”
Homan also expressed that the upcoming title will not be a finale by adding “there is always room for more story in Borderlands.”
Furthermore, Winker explained that all three main installments will be directly connected into a saga once players see all the stories together. “[Players] will see it as a saga together and whatever stories are beyond that, they’ll be connected.”
For this discussion, the story in Tales from the Borderlands was omitted as it varies widely depending on players’ choices, plus 2K Games and Gearbox Software have not confirmed which parts of the story are canon.
