Call of Duty: Ghosts was announced today and fans of the series should certainly be excited. Detailed in the official press release for the game, Ghosts will be arriving on current and next-generation consoles as well as the PC platform. The game will be running on an entirely new, next-generation engine, something fans have been asking for for years. The game as expected will also have a whole new setting, new characters and more.

Along side the announcement, Activision also announced that the full reveal for Call of Duty: Ghosts will take place at the next-generation Xbox reveal on May 21st. Assuming they follow suite with past reveals, they will more than likely show of the campaign before multiplayer, but here’s hoping we can get a little taste of both.

“Everyone was expecting us to make Modern Warfare 4, which would have been the safe thing to do. But we’re not resting on our laurels,” said Mark Rubin, executive producer of Infinity Ward. We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we’re building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players. We can’t wait to share them with our community.

“Infinity Ward is going all-in to create the next generation of Call of Duty worthy of the world’s greatest fans.”

If you never got a chance to see Activision’s next-generation engine, you can check out the video below. Whether or not Call of Duty: Ghosts will use this engine is unknown at this time, but since it’s the publishers flagship franchise, we wouldn’t be all that surprised. Other rumored details point at destructible environments both online and off, cover mechanics such as sliding into cover and peeking around walls etc. The return of Ghost also hasn’t  been confirmed yet, but regarding the title it’s pretty blunt that he’ll be the main character unless Activision really wants to surprise fans of the series.
