Crystal Dynamics: Marvel’s Avengers is the ‘Biggest Thing We’ve Ever Done’

The studio head at Crystal Dynamics reveals that Marvel’s Avengers will be even bigger in scale compared to any of the company’s previous titles.

Crystal Dynamics’s studio head, Scott Amos, spoke to GamesIndustry.biz about its upcoming game. Amos outlined his plans for Marvel’s Avengers including the scale of collaboration accross multiple companies, and how that reflects into the scale of the game.

“It’s the biggest thing that we’ve ever done, we now have five studios working together to pull this off.”

He continued to say, “We’ve literally had to put these five studios together and say: ‘We’re going this far. Tomb Raider, awesome. Rise of the Tomb Raider, even better. Shadow of the Tomb Raider… and it’s like no, we’re going beyond the boundaries.’”

Amos also revealed that Crystal Dynamics has attempted to put together an ‘all star cast’ to work on different aspects of the game. The company has managed to attract big names to help with narrative story-telling, multiplayer, and combat design.

“We’ve had to hire experts like Shaun Escayg, who is our creative director. He told stories for Uncharted and The Last of Us. Dave Fifield was a game director who worked on Halo and Call of Duty, we needed him to help us with multiplayer. Vince Napoli, he’s our lead combat designer, he just did God of War, come help us with the combat. We cherry-picked the best of the best and said: ‘Let’s put this together in a new way for something bigger than we’ve ever done’.”

Fans of the Avengers who may be worried if Marvel is involved in the project can rest easy. Amos confirmed Marvel is fully involved and supportive like a development partner instead of just acting like a license holder.

“That’s how it started, [Marvel] really looked at us and said, ‘Crystal, you guys are experts at making games, we’re experts at The Avengers. What do you want to do?’.”

Amos elaborated about the depth of the working relationship between Crystal Dynamics and Marvel.

“They’re not just collaborators, they’re partners. They’re embedded with us as a team. We bring them to the studio and go through it together. Bill is 25 years at Marvel. He knows everybody. We’re like, ‘So we have a character, and this storyline we saw in issue x,’ and he’s like, ‘I can get you the writer, let’s go see what that person thinks’… We have this amazing collaboration with them that lets us do a little of the iconic fan service and a lot of doing an original take that makes it feel fresh and familiar.”

Crystal Dynamics has garnered serious respect over its 25-year history delivering some amazing games. The company’s most recent triumph concerned the rebooted Tomb Raider franchise. All three award-winning Tomb Raider entries were hailed as critical darlings and have been credited by selling over 18 million copies worldwide.
