Dead Space 3 will supposedly be twice as long as the previous games

See that meteor? That’s about as big as Dead Space 3 will apparently be.

Dead Space and Dead Space 2 weren’t exactly short games, both taking around 12 or so hours to complete if you weren’t rushing through. However, it seems Dead Space 3 will be pulling a Resident Evil 6 in its quest to completely eclipse the past titles in terms of length.

In a recent interview with Playstation Lifestyle, senior producer David Woldman stated the following at one point:

We try to ensure that there is enough value on the disc. Times are maybe getting better, but they’re still tough on people’s incomes. Dead Space 3, just in the single campaign, by itself, is conservatively twice as long as Dead Space 1 or 2.

Of course, developers have a habit of exaggerating their games’ playtime when talking about them, since it’s always easier to market a game with a ton of content. That’s not even mentioning the fact that total length will vary depending on a certain gamer’s skill and speed.

However, if he is being truthful and you’re not the kind of person who does speedruns, then you can probably expect Dead Space 3 to last around 20 hours, which is massive for an action game with this high of a budget. In fact, one has to wonder why EA was so concerned about sales for Dead Space 3 being enough to cover its supposedly massive cost; surely if the budget were such a huge concern, they wouldn’t allow Visceral to make the game so long in the first place?

Of course, this will inevitable bring about a debate between quality and quantity. What are your thoughts, single-players? Let us know. Dead Space 3 releases Feb. 5 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

  1. Really liked the demo so I’m looking forward to playing this come February.

  2. I know how crazy this is going to sound, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a good thing. Since we know that DS3 includes microtransactions for gun parts, it is not a stretch to say that a lot of this time may be grinding for gun parts. In other words, it’ll justify microtransactions that would otherwise not be needed.

    1. That doesn’t sound crazy at all, especially knowing EA. Good observation.

  3. If they are being truthful or even if its just another half as long and not twice that would still be great (in my opinion) allowing for a more varied experience. What i mean by that is judging from the demo and previews there will be a lot more action in parts than on the first 2 and this is something ive been dreading because i dont want this to turn into army of two, and with a longer or much longer x2 game it leaves much more room for the possibility of more slow burn parts or parts more closely resembling the first game which built intensity and suspense. If thats the case i will be completely fine with more action in the game here and there. I loved the first 2 and even after having my doubts because of all the things they crammed in there that the real fans didnt want or the game didnt really need, i still have faith in visceral to pull off that amazing atmosphere that we all love and what makes dead space the unique title that it is. As one of if not my favorite franchise of this generation im keeping my fingers crossed. Guess ill find out in a week or so.
