Detroit: Become Human is a “Giant Leap” Over Beyond: Two Souls

Detroit: Become Human Release

Detroit: Become Human will offer significant story and gameplay improvements over Quantic Dream’s previous efforts, according to the developers.

Speaking to GameReactor at Lisbon Games Week, the game’s Lead Writer, Adam Williams, said that the ambitions for Detroit far outstrip those for Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. “If you think about the principles of Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain in terms of intuitive gameplay and engaging storytelling, and compare them to Detroit, you will realize that this is a giant leap in both areas,” he said.

He went on to emphasise that the new game “offers a certain freedom” that sets it apart, and that each of the three main characters (Connor, Kara, and Markus) will have special abilities. For example, Connor’s ability to analyse and reconstruct crime scenes (discussed in OnlySP’s recent preview) is a unique mechanic that the other two protagonists will not share. Furthermore, rather than being a strictly personal affair, Detroit’s story will have ramifications that extend to the eponymous city and the world at large, with a particular focus on social issues.

Williams also spoke about how the team settled on Detroit as the setting. Drawing on real-world history, the team envisioned that the empty factories left behind by the exodus of vehicle manufacturers from the city would be prime real estate for Cyber-Life, the fictional company that build the androids. Therefore, “just like with cars in the past, Detroit is in our universe once again became the pillar of the second industrial revolution of the United States of America and the world,” he said.

Detroit: Become Human is currently slated for release in early 2018, exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
