Is it possible we may have seen the end of the single player Star Wars title, Star Wars 1313? It appears that Disney has closed the long time Star Wars publisher, LucasArts and is being restructured. LucasArts representative offered this statement to Game Informer in response from the announcement. About 150 people have been laid off due to this closure and LucasArts will be restructured as a label moving forward.
“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”
So, what does this mean for Star Wars 1313? It made a pretty big splash at E3 and a lot of footage was shown of what was being made of the game. LucasArts seems to have trouble keeping projects around in recent years. With the public debacle of Star Wars Battlefront III being cancelled and worse off Kinect Star Wars game being their recent endeavors, I am surprise this didn’t happen sooner. No word has been seen yet about 1313, it would be quite unfortunate if the project was cancelled, as it looked very promising. Uncharted in space? How could you not want that? Kotaku is reporting from a “reliable source” that Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault are cancelled.
Our prayers and sympathies go out to those that may have lost their jobs due to this closure.
