Details on Dynasty Warriors 9 have been frustratingly scarce, but that may no longer be the case later this month.

Koei Tecmo, the publisher behind the Dynasty Warriors series, sent out a tweet yesterday, May 2, 2017, announcing that more details regarding Dynasty Warriors 9 will be revealed later this month. The tweet can be seen below:

The few details that have surfaced about the franchise’s newest installment have intrigued its followers since announcement. Arguably the most exciting piece of information is the game’s transition to an open-world environment as opposed to the enclosed, albeit large, combat areas for which the series is known. In addition, Dynasty Warriors 9 will also revamp characters’ moveset combinations. The entire roster of playable characters from Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires will also be returning, as well as at least one new character—Zhou Cang.

No information regarding a release date or platforms on which the game will be available has been provided. However, the history of the series suggests that Dynasty Warriors 9 will presumably be available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Versions for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox 360 are also possible, but unlikely given the heavy shift towards current-gen platforms.

Dynasty Warriors is a series of hack-and-slash video games developed by Omega Force and published by Koei (1997-2009) and Koei Tecmo (2009-present). The series is a spin-off of Koei’s turn-based strategy series Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which is based loosely on the Chinese historical text Records of the Three Kingdoms. The first game in the series, Dynasty Warriors, is unique among the series, taking the form of a fighting game, whereas the rest of the series revolves around heavily populated hack-and-slash battles.
