Sorry I’m late everyone!

The best part about being in games journalism is the fact that “I got distracted playing video games” is often a valid excuse. Unfortunately, I wasn’t playing anything for OSP, which makes it an invalid excuse. I did get wrapped up in Moon Hunters a bit this month (check out my review here), but mostly I’ve been playing a lot of Pokken Tournament and Ark with my friend. So not even single-player focused titles!

In any case, I’m here right now with some good news: OSP remains on track to have our best year ever. I know I’ve said this already, but it can sometimes be a bit touch and go. A 200,000 visitor month (unfortunately we haven’t hit that milestone yet this year) can easily be followed by 50,000 hits. But this year we’ve already surpassed 100,000 hits every month and we are basically still on track to hit 200,000 in March thanks to a few big stories and the support of returning traffic. I mentioned last month that I noticed a slight upswing in our returning visitors and that remains true now, so I’d like to say again, thank you all for coming back to us and making Only Single Player your source for single player gaming news. I’ve noticed more and more people praising us for our niche in gaming media and our continued focus on features and interviews that aim at our target audience of single player gamers seems to be paying off.

But of course, I don’t view success in only numbers (that’s just an easy metric for us to measure) but in our readership’s satisfaction. So make sure that, aside from visiting us regularly for your single player gaming fix, you also sound off in the comments and on our forums to let us know what you want to see. It’s the only way we can continue to improve. And, as always, make sure you follow us on Facebook and Twitter to be kept abridge of all of our newest stories. We’re here for you, the reader, so make sure you make your voice heard!

Unfortunately we had a few members of the team leave us this week. Kayvon Ghoreshi and Rhys Cooper both left OSP in pursuit of other opportunities. They leave us with heavy hearts but high hopes for the careers of these two fine young men. The team at Only Single Player wishes them all the best in their future endeavors and thanks them for all they’ve done to help us build the site into what it is today…and what it will become tomorrow.

This leaves us with a few spots left on the team. We had a lot of great content this month that you should definitely check out if you haven’t already. One of the best parts of my job is simply by virtue of reading (nearly) every story, I’m brought up to speed with a lot of projects I wouldn’t know about otherwise, even if I was back to being just a news writer. Eastshade is one of those projects. A unique premise with an interesting twist, the developers over at Eastshade Studios have eschewed normal combat mechanics to make a game where conflict is resolved in other ways. Be sure to check out Andrea’s excellent interview here if you haven’t already.

We put out far too many excellent articles for me to feature them all here (I’d be writing all day and those scary dinosaurs aren’t going to tame themselves), so I’ll just direct you to the front page and invite you to peruse our content yourself. The “features” tab is a great place to go to get stories that other sites generally don’t focus on including our in-depth interviews with indie developers about projects you may not have even heard of yet.

Finally, I’d like to give you all an update on our ongoing discussion about revising our review scores. After some internal discussions over the past month or so, we’ve decided that we’re going to keep our 1-10 scale, but we’re going to do a better job of defining what each number means to make it easier for reviewer and reader alike to get a quick and dirty feel for how the reviewer felt about the game. In addition, we’re no longer going to be tying the overall score to the rest of the categories. This means that a game will not suffer necessarily for lacking in the graphics department (for games like Undertale) or even the story department (for games like Kingdom). If a game’s graphics or story are bad in a way that affects the overall enjoyment of the game, clearly that will have an overall effect on the final score, but that will be left up to the reviewer, not some averaging algorithm. It is my hope that the end result will be much clearer and more helpful for the reader (and easier for the reviewer overall).
