Epic Games has expanded its development and toolset assets by acquiring Quixel.

Quixel, a photogrammetry start-up company, owns Quixel Megascans, a library comprising over 10,000 2D and 3D assets. Sometime after the acquisition is completed, all of Quixel’s photogrammetry assets will be free for Unreal Engine developers. Beginning today, 10 Megascans asset packs are available for free on the Unreal marketplace.

Quixel’s Mixer and Bridge tools will be free as well. The former tool allows for mixing scans quickly to create ultra-realistic tileable surfaces. The latter is a desktop application that serves as a supporting tool for browsing, searching, downloading, importing and exporting Megascans assets.

Additionally, more than 100 employees over at Quixel will be joining Epic Games, while also staying in Sweden. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney commented on the acquisition with, “By coming together with Quixel to make Megascans free for all use in Unreal Engine, this level of artistry is now available to everyone from triple-A studios to indies.”

This is not the first acquisition Epic Games has made, as it acquired Psyonix, developer of Rocket League, earlier this year.
