During Gamescom 2019, GATO Studios has provided a blowout of new details about its upcoming old-school RPG The Waylanders, including a new gameplay trailer.
On Twitter, the team revealed that two more industry veterans have joined the ambitious project: writer Chris Avellone (Fallout series) and lead music artist Inon Zur (Fallout 4 and Prince of Persia).
These two join former Dragon Age creative director Mike Laidlaw has had a prominent role in the game. During an interview with IGN, executive producer Fernando Preito credits Laidlaw for helping to “create high level narrative and to structure the game and the story.”
Fernando also praised narrative lead and Telltale alumnus Emily Grace Buck for bringing “depth […] to the characters.”
During the same stream, project director Sergio Prieto spoke about the gameplay, describing it as “real time RPG with combat pause.”
“When we use our combat pause, we can then queue attacks, and then make predictions on what will be in the combat.” An example of the system in action is available in the trailer embedded at the bottom of this article.
Real-time strategic combat was a feature often included in older RPGs such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. KotOR games also allowed players to pause combat to consider strategy before and during intense fights. More modern RPGs have tended to increase freedom through freestyle combat, as in the Elder Scrolls series.
Sergio also explained that players will be able to choose between six classes at the start of the game: Guardian, Warrior, Rogue, Ranger, Healer, and Sorcerer. However, he went on to say that as the story progresses, the classes will expand to 30, meaning that each class is likely to benefit from five subclasses:
“In the middle of the game […] we’ll have advanced classes; there will be 30 advanced classes in the game.”
