Far Cry: New Dawn

Far Cry: New Dawn sees a change of setting for Ubisoft’s open-world franchise,  expanding upon the destruction left after the events of Far Cry 5.

What is Far Cry: New Dawn?

The game is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, which also created Far Cry 5. New Dawn follows the series tradition of a spin-off title following the release of a mainline title.

Set seventeen years after the events of Far Cry 5, New Dawn takes place in the post-apocalyptic world left after the nuclear war predicted by Joseph Seed. As in that earlier game, this standalone spin-off will allow players to fully customise their avatar, including both their appearance and gender.

New Dawn will feature twin sister antagonists Mickey and Lou (spotlighted in the trailer below), who grew up during the apocalypse. These girls lead a band of scavengers known as the Highwaymen, who will act as the primary enemies in the game.

Why are we excited?

Unlike other entries in the franchise, Far Cry: New Dawn is a direct sequel to Far Cry 5. To continue the storyline from Far Cry 5 is a refreshing change for the series and one that allows the developer to bring back familiar characters and answer questions—particularly regarding the fate of The Father in the wake of the nuclear apocalypse he wanted to bring about. The post-apocalyptic setting gives the team the freedom to reimagine Hope County in a new light, filled with vibrant colours and over-the-top creatures.

Additional elements of gameplay have been added to New Dawn, which creates a new level of excitement for fans. A focus of the game will be the creation and customisation of weapons and vehicles. These crafting mechanics take place in the upgradeable ‘Homebase’, which is also a new element within the franchise.

A new game mode called Expeditions will allow the player to explore beyond the map into new regions to gather resources used in the ‘Homebase’.

In an industry that lacks variation, the inclusion of coloured, female antagonists is one that makes a game worth looking out for. How the twin sisters interact on screen will be of interest, as it is a unique relationship not often seen in video games and lends itself to fascinating interplay.

New Dawn was revealed at The Game Awards in 2018 for a February 2019 release, just 11 months after the launch of the previous instalment. The Game Awards reveal has over 1.6 million views, which suggests that the unexpected announcement has increased the excitement of fans who were not anticipating a new release so soon.

When can we play it?

Far Cry: New Dawn will be released on February 15, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

How do you feel about a return to Hope County? Is it a smart move by Ubisoft Montreal or would the team have been better off with another far-flung spin-off in the vein of Blood Dragon or Primal? Let us know below, and come back tomorrow when we highlight the upcoming title from one of the most acclaimed indie developers on the planet.
