Lords of the Fallen developer Deck13 has released fourteen minutes of commentated footage from its upcoming sci-fi RPG, The Surge.
The gameplay segment introduced in this commentary, embedded below, follows soon after one showcased in an earlier trailer, with the main character continuing to explore the ruined CREO facility in the game’s take on a post-apocalyptic Earth.
Narrated by the game’s designer, Adam Hetenyi, the footage introduces some of the narrative of the game, as the player character undertakes a sidequest to help a trapped scientist escape from the facility. Despite having a story wrapper, the footage focuses on both exploration, showing off both The Surge’s rather generic environments and its more unique strategy-based melee combat, which alters a core element of contemporary action games by incorporating horizontal and vertical strikes, in lieu of heavy and light attacks.
This footage also introduces the game’s ranged combat options, which includes an automated drone, and provides a good glimpse at the character’s ability to take weapons and exo-skeleton parts from felled opponents.
As with Lords of the Fallen, Deck13 has again drawn inspiration from Dark Souls for its tough combat, but introduced the difficulty to an entirely new setting. The Surge takes place in a future in which Earth has been ravaged by climate change, which the company CREO has been trying to reverse.
With an interesting premise, promising combat, and an intriguing take on the post-apocalyptic setting, The Surge is shaping up as a worthwhile addition to the growing list of games that follows in the tradition of Dark Souls.
