Frictional Games, the team behind Amnesia: The Dark Descent and SOMA, has announced that it is working on two games, only one of which will be horror-focused.
Speaking to Gamereactor at the recent Nordic Games Conference, Frictional’s founder and creative director, Thomas Grip, said that the team is “trying to stray away from horror games.” The reason, according to Grip, is that, after developing two titles centred around being hunted by monsters, the concept “feels old.”
Despite these comments, one of the games currently in development will retain the horror elements upon which the studio has built a reputation, though will likely be a departure from the norm. One of the team’s goals with the new, unannounced title is to freshen the horror experience and “make it more exciting.” Unfortunately, Grip did not go into detail about how the team aims to achieve that goal.
Frictional’s other game, meanwhile, is a different proposition. With SOMA, the team focused on creating an in-depth story, and that narrative-centred approach indicates the template of the developer’s second game. That, says Grip, was the team’s “goal all along” as a means of setting up for a future in which the narrative experience is foremost in new projects.
The two games are currently at different stages of development, though Grip would not say which was likely to release first, nor mention target platforms or release dates. Frictional’s most recent title was 2015’s SOMA, which OnlySP’s James Schumacher scored 7.2/10, saying the game would be suitable for “for those looking for a story-driven, thinking-person’s horror experience.”
