Hey all, Michael Urban here.
The folks at our partner site, Velocity Gamer, are now trying to bring the site out of its lengthy coma by establishing more of an identity for it. To kick things off, they’ll be introducing a new set of weekly columns for the site, each of which will be manned by a specific staff member and themed around a certain topic.
I couldn’t help but look at this as a great opportunity to transfer my new weekly segment, “Friday Night Rants,” over there. Not only do they quite frankly desperately need the hits, but it would also be more suited to the type of vision that I have for FNR.
It’s no secret that over the past year I’ve been frantically trying to find a unique format for a weekly feature that would consistently and continually engage audiences. First there was “Concerning Comments,” then there were the “Weekly Challenges,” and in between those were countless other ideas that never came to fruition. That’s when I realized that for a successful feature series, passion and meaningful content is also a must…
From that idea, “Friday Night Rants” was born. I’m happy to report that it’s been moderately successful so far and it’s something I genuinely enjoy doing, so it’s a keeper. That being said, I’m not completely satisfied with it yet.
It will continue to evolve and improve with time, of course, but I also believe that the proper atmosphere is necessary for such a feature to succeed. OnlySP has definitely built its foundation for a more serious, analytical tone, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just not suited to this type of feature, causing a bit of an identity crisis. On one hand, it’s supposed to be unhinged, straight-to-the-point commentary, but I feel it’s clashing with the more professional tone and expectations that have been set by some of OnlySP’s writers, as fantastic as they are. VG is just a bit more relaxed, and it would be a perfect fit.
Therefore, Velocity Gamer is the new home for FNR. There, I’ll truly be able to form a unique voice for it and fully adopt a more unstructured and ‘risky’ method of ranting. When it comes to discussing issues, my thoughts are definitely a bit scattered and atypical, so I feel this is for the best. I’ll still provide occasional editorials for OnlySP, so this doesn’t really change much. Just know that if you’re following FNR, you’ll now find it on VG in a (hopefully) improved form.
Wow, this was way longer than it needed to be. Happy New Years, single-players! We thank you so much for supporting us during our rough first year, though it’s only going to get better from here on out! We hope 2013 brings you unparalleled joy and some fantastic gaming experiences.
