Bigben Interactive has acquired French game developers Spiders as it adds the specialist RPG studio to its internal development team.
Spiders was founded in 2008 and is the developer currently working on the exciting new project GreedFall. The studio is considered a specialist at creating RPGs and have even designed and hugely benefited from its own development engine, Silk. Some recent titles from Spiders include Mars: War Logs, Bound by Flame, and The Technomancer.
Bigben has put considerable effort into studio acquisitions over the past year including Cyanide and Eko Software. Bigben also gained publishing rights to Cyanide’s Tour de France and Pro Cycling Manager.
Bigben clearly has big ambitions to be a major player in the games industry. Head of publishing Benoît Clerc announced that he wanted the studio to publish between 12 and 15 games every year in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz:
“We need to do things that are different, and be experts in the genres in which we want to be a serious player, a serious publisher, that is only achievable by bringing people in-house. We need to dig into a few genres, and build our expertise year after year after year… It needs to be done with people you are working with for the long-term.”
Furthermore, Bigben CEO Alain Flac released a statement following the announcement of the acquisition:
“This acquisition fits perfectly with Bigben’s strategy to increase its know-how in the development of video games in the AA strategic segment, we are delighted to welcome the talents of Spiders who will strengthen our Development unit and participate in new and even more ambitious projects.”
