Hey! Listen – “Road Most Traveled” (Morrowind)

0

As you step out of the office and into the middle-of-nowhere town of Seyda Neen, a warm atmosphere greets you. The world around you, consisting of strange trees and mushrooms, is like nothing you’ve ever seen before, but somehow that makes it all the more inviting. This is a world begging to be explored, one that you’ll spend a long while in. You’re not certain what lies ahead and you know it’ll be dangerous, but somehow, you have a feeling you’ll find great and wondrous things with the aid of your pleasant spirit and adamant curiosity. With a gentle, uplifting tune in your head, you set off.

That tune, called “Road Most Traveled,” was composed by Jeremy Soule and plays periodically throughout your travels in the world of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. It’s certainly a varied piece, encompassing moods ranging from fantastical whimsey to eerie uncertainty, but the overall theme is one of excitement. It’s an optimistic track that perfectly fits the grand, ambitious journey that all players of Morrowind have planned for themselves the second they set foot in the game’s world.

My only complaint is the title; isn’t there a famous saying that encourages people to take the road LEAST traveled? Surely the average Morrowind player goes into the game wanting to embark on their own unique journey, not to mention the Elder Scrolls games have always encouraged choice and charting your own course, if you will. Being told that your travels are just like the ones of any other person isn’t exactly encouraging.

Jeremy Soule is an American Composer who has often been hailed as the John Williams of video game soundtracks. He’s made compositions for the Guild Wars, Elder Scrolls, Dungeon Siege, Neverwinter Nights, SOCOM and Company of Heroes series’, among others. His site seems to be down at the time of writing, though I’m sure you know how to do a quick Google search on him if you want to know more.
