Earlier today, Capcom held their annual Captivate event, unleashing a new trailer and release date for Resident Evil 6, announcing Lost Planet 3 and opening the floodgates on Ninja Theory’s upcoming reimagining of Devil may Cry. In case you don’t frequent our sister site, Velocity Gamer, you can see the latest trailer through this link, but that is only one of the things that has emerged about this promising project. I’ll start you off with a transcription from a factsheet that has been released to the public:
“Detailing Dante’s early years and set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC Devil May Cry™ will retain the stylish action, fluid combat and self-assured protagonist that have defined the iconic series but inject a more brutal and visceral edge. The Dante of DmC is a young man who has no respect for authority or indeed society in general. Dante knows that he is not human, but also that he is not like the demons that have tormented him throughout his life. Caught between worlds, he feels like an outcast. He is now discovering and coming to terms with what it means to be the child of a demon and an angel. This split personality has a real impact on gameplay with Dante being able to call upon angel and demon abilities at will, transforming his Rebellion sword on the fly to dramatically affect both combat and movement.”
The features list included on the fact sheet also reveals that the game isn’t likely to disappoint long-term fans on anything more than aesthetic front, with staff that have worked on previous games having been present in the development process since day one, the return of the style-based combat ranking system and staple characters returning alongside new ones. Of course, those characters are likely to have seen a redesign in the same vein as Dante himself, but it’ll be interesting to see what Ninja Theory’s takes on them are.
In addition to this, studio head Tameem Antonaides has recently been involved in a few interviews regarding the game. In one such with GameTrailers, he sought to allay the fears of many fans pertaining to the combat system, a facet of their games that Ninja Theory have never really managed to wow with:
“Often, when people talk about accessible, the sub-text is ‘they mean dumb it down’. We wanted to make sure that’s absolutely not the case, so hence we’ve been collaborating quite deeply with Capcom Japan on the combat system, introducing all the elements that make DMC what it is.”
“Right up to familiar features for hardcore players like jump-cancelling, enemy step, parrying. They’re all in there. And the idea is that, even if you complete the game, even on the second playthrough, you’ll still be discovering more moves, more abilities, more ways to play.“
Hopefully that much is true, and not simply PR spin. With an all new assortment of secondary weapons, and the ability to switch them on the fly through the use of Dante’s Angel and Devil powers, it seems a given that there will be great depth to be found on this front. However it pans out, Antonaides is happy that the focus is finally moving away from the look of Dante and the game as a whole, as indicated in an interview with IGN:
“There’s been a year and a half now for people to either get used to it or completely disown it. At this point in time it’s more about what we can offer that’s new and how it feels to play, rather than ‘You’re on the docks, defend yourself!’ I’m relieved that we can start talking about the new elements we’re bringing to the game rather than defending how it’s going to be familiar to old DMC hands.”
While I can’t speak for all of the other members of the team here at OnlySP, I can say quite comfortably that Devil may Cry is most definitely on my most anticipated list for this year and I’ll continue to bring you all of the latest news that I can glean about it. Ninja Theory have proven themselves more than capable of catering to the single player audience, and we can tell already that this trend is going to continue with their latest game. It’s already promised to put in an appearance at E3 and while no release date has been announced, it is highly expected to be out this year.
