Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness, an isometric, party-based RPG developed by Vienna-based developer GrapeOcean Technologies, has hit Kickstarter today with a promising start.
Black Geyser appears to be tastefully entrenched in classic RPG tropes, complete with real-time pause mechanics and a timeless artstyle. Story-wise, Black Geyser is set in a world infested by greed and envy.
The synopsis, as per the Kickstarter page, reads,”Chaos and despair spread throughout the Kingdom of Isilmerald. Its desperate people cry out, praying to the gods for help. But the force they face is no mere plague of the undead, or demonic attack… Something far more sinister, far more primal is afoot. Avarice!”
Gameplay-wise, the project is indebted to series such as Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale. The title promises a complex greed system that directly affects everything from combat to commerce, seeking to twine the thematic concerns of the narrative directly into gameplay. The greed system marks Black Geyser as different than its competitors, which the developer has outlined:
“For example, if you take all loot and accept quest rewards every single time, avarice will infest the kingdom faster, triggering an opposite process: NPCs will offer you less valuable rewards for quests, and—while you will never miss a powerful item from a villain—you might miss some of the finest wares from merchants. Shops will get extremely expensive, and may even go bankrupt and close shop.”
As for the real details of play, Black Geyser allows players to form a party of up to five members, each complete with unique histories and personalities, with the main character able to assume several races, classes, and skills. The combat is real-time-with-pause, with a clear, slot-based spell cooldown system.
The project is set to release on PC, Mac, and Linux systems in August 2019.
