It’s About Time Sony Brought Resistance to the PS4

31

Obviously a new Resistance game won’t be announced at E3 this year, but in this author’s opinion it is about time for the franchise to make a return on the PS4.

Resistance 3 released all the way back in 2011, can you believe it has been that long already? The Resistance series was one of the PS3’s most consistent high profile releases, with each game in the trilogy receiving 90+ scores on IGN, 4-4.5 on Metacritic and is highly regarded as one of the PS3’s best franchises across the board.

I didn’t actually enjoy Resistance: Fall of Man or Resistance 2 that much due to the gunplay the games offered, but Resistance 3 was easily one of my favorite games to release on the PS3 and made me a fan of the franchise. It’s also a series that I think deserves another chance to wow gamers on the PS4 if Insomniac or another developer were to return to the franchise.

The Killzone series is good and Sony tried to make it the flagship FPS franchise for the PS4, but ultimately didn’t live up to the expectations set by its predecessors critically. Who knows, maybe Guerilla Game’s upcoming open world FPS, Horizon, will be the flagship FPS title for the PS4 .

Insomniac was obviously deep in development with Sunset Overdrive at the time, but I believe the Resistance franchise would have made a much better debut on the PS4 than Killzone: Shadowfall did and would have made the series one of Sony’s key franchises for years to come.

Unfortunately for us, Insomniac has no plans to develop Resistance 4 and the franchise is at the mercy of Sony.  So if you want to see a new Resistance game for the PS4, we better start yelling at Sony to make it happen.

Would you be down for a new entry in the Resistance franchise? Let us know in the comments section!

  1. Pretty gutsy answer by Insomniac. Almost sounds like their relationship with Sony hit a sour note.

    1. Doubt it. They’re re imagining Ratchet and Clank for the PS4 and working with Sony on the movie too.

    2. Ummm Insomniac has said ever since R3 released that they were done with the Resistance franchise and would not be making any future Resistance games…They’ve since made 2 or 3 PS games, so their relationship is fine….Insomniac also went to Sony with Sunset Overdrive before MS, except Sony wanted to own the IP so they went to MS with it….

      1. Ah. I stand corrected! :-)

  2. this game sucked nobody cared about , now that SONY is the Mass Favorite console all suddenly Resistence is a great franchise? are you kidding me? i bet most of you never played Resistence on PS3 or back in the 7th gen most of you Talked trash about this game because you were XBOX fanboys

  3. I would love a Resistance 4 for PS4. Fall of Man is my favourite followed by R3. Since Insomniac aren’t interested in creating it I wonder what studio would be a good fit.

  4. please no

  5. Would love more split-screen games.

  6. “Obviously a new Resistance game won’t be announced at E3 this year”.

Of course it could, Sony owns the IP, Insomniac doesn’t have to be the studio making a new game in the series.
Guerrilla Games has nearly 300 staff at this point, they have their new IP, but they could easily handle a new Killzone and a new Resistance game simultaneously.

It’s been 4 years, plenty of time for Sony to have assign someone to develop the game.
This could even be a surprise Fall 2015 release.

    1. Definitely some wishful thinking there, but who knows! Sony’s kept their lineup very under wraps this year.

      1. It’s hardly wishful thinking, I’m not saying that’s going to happen, I’m just saying it could.
4 years is an ample amount of time to make a game from an established franchise like Resistance and it certainly wouldn’t be the 1st time Sony announced a new game at E3 to release in the same year.

  7. game was trash no thank u

  8. 100% agreed. In fact, Resistance is in my top 5 Sony 2015 E3 wishlist:

5). PS1 classics finally announced cross buy/play on PS4 (they’re cross buy/play on PSP, Vita, and PS3, but NOT the newest most powerful PS4)
4). New Resistance, Wipeout, Twisted Metal, or Jet Moto/Splashdown reboot (water/wave racing genre is wide open empty for the taking!!!)
3). New God of War(4?) PS4 trailer + release date + GOW4 demo announced exclusive with GOW3 Remastered
2). I had the Uncharted Trilogy HD Remaster on here, but since that’s just been announced, I’ll settle for ANYTHING Naughty Dog and/or Uncharted related :)
    1). Last Guardian RE-reveal

  9. Sony recently trademarked ‘Resistance’.
Because the first game was called Resistance: Fall of Man, this could be a reboot.

    1. no because the trademark expired they have to file again. I doubt they would reboot it.

  10. Resistance was ruined for me because of the initial lack of rumble. Multiplayer felt like a graveyard. I wanted to like the game, but it didn’t feel right. Eventually I do want to get the other two games and give the trilogy a chance.

    1. the first resistance was great. but you seem like a typical cod player.

      1. FailFish

  11. Resistance 2 is my favorite co-op and the best SP in the series, which I rate in my top 10 games of all time. R3 fell a little flat for me compared to the others, but was still a 9+. I would pre-order R4 if it would help reboot this series if it would be closer to R1 or R2. It is one of the reasons I went with PS over XB.

  12. The franchise has way too much potential to be shelved for so long, especially with the PS4 capability now. Personally I love the games, the world and the lore, but even for those that didn’t, I’d at least try to appreciate that the franchise has one of the best and most varied alien foes in gaming, had excellent weapon imagination, and a great story surrounding Tunguska with lots of unexplored story elements and great lore & fan fiction.

Think something like Destiny visuals and gun play with hectic battles and great weapons and bosses…it really could be fantastic.

  13. Yes love those games. Want a remaster also

  14. I would love a remaster of this trilogy brought to PS4. No it wasn’t the best series out there, but it’s a PS classic, and IMO one of the more original games out there in terms of lore/concepts/etc. Probably one of the most immersive games I’ve played on Playstation.

It would be cool to see the older Killzone games get a remaster as well (or at least the first one, remaster it like Halo 1 Anniversary was).

  16. I have never played the Resistance series but have always wanted to so i’m hoping they also release the series on PS4 on at least on PlayStation now.

  18. They should’ve let it mature and turn it into a space opera, which they were I initially trying to avoid.

Resistance 2 made it seem like that was the direction, but resistance 3 pulled a 180° and turned more into a conventional fps.

Man this series had so much potential, it makes me so sad.

  19. Being a huge fan of resitance I have been longing an all new release for both consoles.
Resistance is for lots of players the satisatifier of that deep urge for great all round game play.

  20. Yes, Sony/Insomniac make 4!

  21. Would love a new Resistance game, Especially if it’s more like Resistance 2 as that game was my favorite for the campaign and Online/Co-Op

  22. resistance3 was the best game in the series, then they made the garbage fuse. after that they did the sunset overdrive that was a good game. but the big mistake was making it exclusive to the xbone. and now they do the spiderman game exclusive to the ps4, another big mistake, yet again… i think Insomniac will be no more after this, if not sony save them and want another resistance game for the ps4.

    1. I wouldn’t be so down on Insomniac’s fortunes. The studio is branching out with a very notable investment into VR games, which could really help in the long run. And given the ridiculous popularity of Marvel properties at the moment, Spider-Man has a very good chance of of going crazy. Even without that link, what we’ve seen of the game looks like a lot of fun!
