After struggling to find a development partner for Lords of the Fallen 2, CI Games has chosen New York-based developer Defiant Studios to continue the hardcore ARPG series.
CI Games, the series’s publisher, announced in 2017 that it was looking to outsource development for Lords of the Fallen 2 after the developer of the original title opted to direct its future efforts elsewhere. Defiant Studios is relatively young, forming in 2016 under Managing Director David Grijns, formerly of Avalanche Studios.
In a statement, CI Games chief executive officer Marek Tymiński commented on the partnership:
“We talked to a number of globally respected studios that had shown a strong interest in making the next LotF, and received several solid pitches. We finally decided to move forward with Defiant because we were impressed with their game concept, production expertise, and the pedigree of their developers.”
The developer of the first Lords of the Fallen, Deck 13, confirmed it would not be working on the sequel, instead focusing on The Surge. Lords of the Fallen 2 was originally forecast for a 2017 release, but has been in limbo since losing its creative director in 2015.
Lords of the Fallen was originally released in 2014 to middling reviews, with the title taking significant inspiration from Dark Souls, both aesthetically and mechanically.
No information has been revealed about how much development time has been put into the sequel and whether the new developer, Defiant Studios, will be working from scratch.
