Lords of the Fallen 2 Developer To Bring “New Approach” To “Death Simulator” Genre

Defiant Studios, the newly revealed development team behind the upcoming Lords of the Fallen 2, is aiming to offer an entirely fresh spin on the Souls-like formula.

Speaking to Eurogamer, the studio’s managing director David Grijns and creative director Roland Lesterlin hinted that the team is uninterested in simply recreating the successes of its competitors. Saying that team looked to FromSoftware’s seminal saga and Nioh for inspiration, Lesterlin revealed that the team was “able to come up with a new concept that tried to push a few of those categories a little further along.”

Lesterlin added that one of Defiant’s goal is to grow the fanbase as gamers may have been unsure about tackling a “death simulator,” to use the vernacular of Grijns. Said Lesterlin, “We want to take that fantasy for the player and try to show those fans something a little bit new—a new approach in it. […] I love the stuff From does, but I’m excited about trying to bring something new.”

The developers would not elucidate the exact shape those attempts would take, but did provide some small development updates. To wit, Lords of the Fallen 2 will be built on Unreal Engine 4, rather than the proprietary Fledge Engine that powered the previous title, and will not use any of the pre-production work prepared while the game was being developed in-house at CI Games.

The game is currently without a release date or target platforms.
