Today brought rather tragic news for fans of Star Wars games when it was revealed that developer LucasArts was being effectively shut down as a result of restructuring and would not only suffer layoffs, but would also have all of its projects, including the ambitious Star Wars 1313, cancelled.
However, hope may yet remain for the hotly anticipated 1313, which was to be a game featuring a bounty hunter, possibly Boba Fett, and set in the underbelly of the urban planet Coruscant.
Speaking to GameInformer, an anonymous representative from LucasFilm, also owned by Disney now, had the following to say about 1313‘s status and future:
“1313 was looking fantastic, the reception has been great. Our other unannounced titles are fine, it just got to a point where from a business standpoint we couldn’t continue developing those internally and keep up with the direction that the company was going.
It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans. We still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we’re just looking at different models rather than internal production… They’re evaluating everything. There’s always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing.”
In other words, there may yet be a day where you’ll be able to hold a boxed copy of Star Wars 1313, even if you shouldn’t push your luck. It all depends on whether or not Disney finds the project worthwhile and will be able to assign a new developer for it. It seems highly unlikely that they’d sell the rights to another party given the popularity of the franchise, though that remains a possibility as well.
Even if 1313 doesn’t come to fruition, the promise of other Star Wars games to come means that, at the very least, fans may still see concepts from 1313 show up in other titles. The newly announced trilogy of films directed by J.J. Abrams looks to be a likely basis for future games in the franchise.
Stay tuned for future developments on Star Wars 1313 should they happen.
