Madness Returns as Paradox Reveals Final Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 Clan

0

Devotees of the original Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop game, as well as fans of the original Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines will be aware of how important the Clan system is to the World of Darkness setting used by Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2. Each clan has its own powers, strengths, weaknesses, and quirks.

One of the most beloved of those clans is the Malkavians. The madness-stricken clan is unique in that it sees the world in very different compared to other vampires. The world inhabited by the Malkavians is filled with strange whispers and paranoia, where nothing is what it seems at first glance, and madness is always just around the corner.

The team at Paradox Interactive admit that the Malkavians are the most difficult for writers and developers to get to grips with, as they need to tackle creating unique dialogue and encounters with NPCs that members of other clans never get to see. The team also need to tread carefully around the sensitive issues of mental illness, making the job even harder.

However, the mental abilities of the Malkavians provide some of their biggest advantages. Their first discipline, Dementation, can make people flee from them in terror, or make them fly into a destructive rage. Like the Tremere, Malkavians can also use Auspex, which allows them to see through walls or pinpoint enemy weaknesses.

Paradox Interactive has confirmed that players will start off playing as one of the weak Thinblood vampires. As players get to grips with the World of Darkness setting, they will be offered the chance to join one of the ancient vampire clans that control the city of Seattle.

These clans include the physically-oriented Brujah, whose powers of Potence and Celerity enhance strength and speed respectively. The Tremere prefer to use magic, and as a result, are distrusted by other vampire clans. The Tremere have access to Auspex but can also use blood magic known as Thaumaturgy to exert terrible fates on enemies, such as making heir blood boil in their veins.

Sitting at the pinnacle of vampire politics is usually one of the Ventrue. These vampires specialise in manipulation as subterfuge, demonstrated by their discipline of Dominate, which lets them control the minds of those weaker. When things get physical, a Ventrue will turn to the Fortitude skill to ensure they can survive a confrontation.

The Toreador are largely considered to be hedonists, many of them posing as artists or musicians in search of beauty. Like the Brujah, they can use Celerity to move quickly, but they are more often associated with the discipline of Presence, which can charm or distract those around them.

Further information on how the Malkavians will play is expected to be revealed during the Paradox Interactive livestream. To keep an eye on the latest news about Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2, be sure to follow OnlySP on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube
