Former Mass Effect, Fallout 3, and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim developers have founded a new studio focused on creating “fictional universes that center on Black and Brown characters.”

AAA veteran, Manveer Heir (Mass Effect 2, Wolfenstein), announced Brass Lion Entertainment yesterday. Heir explained that the studio’s mission is to increase diversity within the industry by “creating original fictional universes that center on Black and Brown characters [and] cultures.”

Brass Lion’s co-founders also include Bryna Dabby Smith (Sleeping Dogs, The Bourne Conspiracy), and Rashad Redic (The Elder Scrolls V: SkyrimFallout 3).

“It’s no secret that the video game industry workforce in North America is predominantly white and male, and that those homogeneous creative voices are disproportionately in charge of creative in games, compared to the demographics of the players,” wrote Heir.

While there is a push to diversify the representation of characters and stories in games, it’s happening fairly slowly and often without the inclusion of creatives and developers who represent that diverse tapestry. As a result, we are left with an industry that often misses the mark when it comes to representing our collective communities and cultures.

Heir also revealed the team’s first project: Corner Wolves. The title is set in mid ’90s Harlem where protagonist Jacinte sets out to uncover her father’s killer.

Corner Wolves tells the stories of young people growing up in the hood, and how their lives are shaped and defined by the war on drugs, as they are caught between dope dealers, hustlers, and overzealous police.”

Corner Wolves‘ narrative design is set to be written by acclaimed writer Evan Narcisse (Marvel’s Rise of the Black Panther). Additionally, the music will be composed by producer Just Blaze, who has also worked with Jay-Z, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Beyoncé.
