Mother 3, the conclusion of the much-loved Earthbound series, was on its way to finally being localized in the West, before Nintendo pulled out after concerns over the game’s content.
Despite its fame and cult status in the West, Mother 3 has never been localized in the region. Why, then, did Nintendo pull out of a possible port to the West? According to Game Informer’s Senior Editor Imran Khan, pull out of the deal over concern over the game’s content.
In particular, the company was anxious about how some of the story’s content would be perceived by modern palettes, fearing controversy.
In a ResetEra post, Khan’s exact language read as follows:
“Mother 3 AFAIK is a dead end. It was full steam ahead for a while but upon re-evaluation, there were aspects of the game that weren’t going to go without controversy.”
Earthbound famously got a modern release in the West on the Wii U, but hopes that Mother 3 would share a similar fate on the Nintendo Switch appears futile.
