Marvel’s Avengers has already had a rocky development. Over two years after it was first teased, the game was finally revealed at E3 in June 2019. The reaction to the reveal, however, did not quite go as the developer may have hoped. The character models appeared outdated, the gameplay unintuitive, and, despite promises that the game can be played entirely in single-player, its focus on multiplayer led many to be worried.

Even 18 minutes of gameplay footage, released in August this year, failed to reassure. Updated graphics and character models demonstrated the developer’s dedication to improvement and response to fan feedback, but the gameplay still seemed repetitive and the narrative unpromising.

Earlier this week, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix revealed that Ms. Marvel herself, Kamala Khan, would be one of the main playable characters in the game—and, suddenly, I have never been more excited about Marvel’s Avengers.

Marvel's Avengers - Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel

As an Avengers super-fan, Kamala is attending the A-Day celebration in San Francisco, where the tragedy unleashed a mist that unlocked dormant cells within her, giving her superhuman abilities. Kamala has elastic-like powers and the ability to grow; she uses stretchy and supersized limbs to attack, and her ‘Embiggen’ ability to grow in size and deal extra damage. Ms. Marvel looks like an incredibly fun character to embody, with unique abilities that are set to keep the gameplay interesting.

More importantly, though, is Kamala’s importance to the game’s narrative. She discovers proof of the A-Day tragedy being a set-up for the Avengers, and is ultimately the reason that they reassemble.

Kamala is a unique addition to a previously established roster of characters. Marvel fans have already familiarized themselves with these characters and their depiction within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). For more than ten years, Robert Downey Jr. proved himself a worthy actor for Iron Man; Chris Evans brought the character of Captain America to life; Mark Ruffalo followed a line of successful actors to prove himself as the definitive Hulk; Chris Hemsworth brought true worthiness to the role of Thor; and Scarlett Johansson demonstrated strength as Black Widow.

Marvel’s Avengers_ A-Day _ Official Trailer E3 2019 0-44 screenshotFor Marvel’s Avengers, worry does not come from the actors behind the characters—Nolan North, Jeff Schine, Travis Willingham, Troy Baker, and Laura Bailey have all proven themselves to be incredibly talented actors—but fans are already familiar with each of these characters, so to try and reinvent them in a new medium (especially so soon after the release of Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of 22 films in the MCU) is an impossible, almost foolish task.

Introduce them through the eyes of a fan, however, and you may have my interest.

To witness the downfall of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes though the eyes of an innocent girl will make their disbandment so much more heartbreaking. To then use sheer skill and determination to prove the wrongdoing of their enemies will make their reassembly so much more satisfying.

Thanks to Kamala, I am ready to assemble.

Rhain discovered a long time ago that mixing one of his passions (video games) with the other (writing) might be a good idea, and now he’s been stuck in the industry for over six years with no means of escaping. His favourite games are those with deep and captivating narratives: while it would take far too long to list them all, some include L.A. Noire, Red Dead Redemption (and its sequel), Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Last of Us, and the Uncharted series.
