Work on a New Hitman Has Begun at IO Interactive

After months of hints and speculation, IO Interactive has confirmed that another full-scale Hitman game is in production.

IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak made the low-key announcement as part of a blog post marking the release of the Game of the Year edition of 2016’s episodic release of HITMAN. After stating that proceeds from the re-release would be funnelled towards “the next Hitman game and beyond,” Abrak dropped a few teases about the scope of the project:

“[W]e have exciting new features and some franchise firsts, which we can’t wait to tell you all about.” Unfortunately, the company is not yet ready to reveal more concrete details.  “You’ll have to wait a little longer as we don’t plan to start talking about that until some point in 2018,” Abrak wrote.

However, his allusions to “the conclusion of Season One” and the “ever expanding World of Assassination” of HITMAN earlier in the post strongly suggests that, rather than reverting to the full retail release model of development, IO Interactive will once again produce an episodic series, taking Agent 47 to more exotic locales through staggered releases.

While further information on the future of the series is not forthcoming at the present time, the Game of the Year Edition is available today, bundling together all of the previously-released content for HITMAN: Season One, as well as a new four-mission story arc taking place in reworked versions of existing locations. The re-release also features new outfits, weapons, and challenges.
