New Prince of Persia In Development Using Rayman’s UbiArt Framework | Rumour

The last time we saw Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia series was in 2010, when they released The Forgotten Sands as a kind of tie-in to the feature film starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Murmurings emerged last year that a new entry was in development at Silent Hill: Shattered Memories developer Climax Studios, though the project was quickly revealed to have never progressed beyond the prototyping stage. A new report has emerged from French video game site Portail du Jeu Video that Ubisoft do have a new Prince of Persia title in active development, though it shows a marked departure from more recent titles.

The report states that the series is returning to its roots as a 2D action/platformer and will be developed on the UbiArt Framework Engine, which has powered the most recent Rayman games, as well as the upcoming Child of Light and Valiant Hearts: The Great War. The engine allows for the characters to appear to be rendered in 3D thanks to the way that different parts of characters’ bodies are animated independently, based on a silhouette deformation system. Apparently, in its current state, animations are already in place allowing the character to run, wall-jump and perform sword-based attacks—all stalwart elements of the series.

If the report is to be believed, the game is being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, who are also currently thought to be working on the aforementioned Valiant Hearts, as well as Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Considering that the Assassin’s Creed series started out as a Prince of Persia game, and adopts the majority of the latter’s mechanics, perhaps a return to the classic formula is Ubisoft’s best bet going forward. Let us know what you think in the comments.
