Square-Enix reportedly has a new Thief title in production, to coincide with the release of an upcoming film adaptation of the series, according to the film producer’s website.
Straight Up Films (Transcendence, Jane Got a Gun) acquired the film rights to the series last year and recently posted a status update, which mentioned Square-Enix’s project:
“Widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever created, a fifth sequel is currently in development to be released in step with this motion picture adaptation”
While the wording is highly suggestive of a fully-fledged entry to the series, the announcement could also be referring to the rumoured Thief Go, a spin-off mobile game that would follow in the footsteps of Hitman Go and Deus Ex Go. If a new Thief is in the works, however, development is most likely being handled by series custodian Eidos Montréal, which last year released Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and earlier this year announced a long-term partnership with Marvel to create games based on The Avengers.
That deal is unlikely to bear fruit for quite some time, however, with more details on the first project not forthcoming before 2018, leaving time for a new Thief to be released, if it has been developed concurrently with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
A reboot of the classic Thief series was released in 2014, with OnlySP’s Lachlan Williams saying, “There is a tension with Thief, a strange disconnect somewhere. I think it’s between the philosophy of approach and the mechanics in application. I can see the respect and consideration the team have for the heart of Thief . . . But the mechanical wrapping keeps me from enjoying it.” Hopefully a follow-up would better balance stealth with more modern gameplay tenets.
A follow-up to Thief is a curious proposition for Square-Enix, which also recently cancelled future entries in the Deus Ex series and ended its affiliation with Hitman developer IO Interactive.
