Hino Akihiro, the story and general director for Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, opened up about story and gameplay of the upcoming sequel during E3 2017.
Earlier announcements have already revealed that the game is not a direct sequel to 2013’s Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, and will follow a new character, the deposed boy-king Evan, as he struggles to build a new kingdom.
In an interview with Dalton Link, Bandai Namco’s Social Media and Community Manager, Hino explained that the story will focus on Evan learning to lead, and he will do so by visiting five other kingdoms and helping their rulers with their own problems. Each new king will impart a new lesson to Evan, helping him to grow into a more adept ruler.
Hino was also asked about the improvements to the battle system, which takes a number of forms. Foremost is the that the animations and effects have been reworked to be more “cool and flashy,” while the character switching mechanics have been altered to incorporate a new layer of strategy, though Hino failed to elaborate on this aspect in depth.
The interview ended with Hino reiterating that although fans of the original will be able to pick up on minor details and easter eggs to increase their enjoyment of the game, Ni no Kuni II is not going to exclude anyone who did not play the previous game. The full interview is embedded below:
