NieR: Automata Producer Says Series May Go On

During a panel at PAX East, NieR: Automata producer Yosuke Saito, in response to a fan question, said that the series has a ‘50% chance’ to continue.

Saito expanded on his statement by admitting that his comments stem from him wanting to work with the team again, but that the final decision lies with series director Yoko Taro. Previously, Taro has expressed disinterest in sequels but, considering his creatively schizophrenic tendencies, anything is possible with the NieR franchise.

Shortly after Automata released last year, publisher Square Enix hinted that more projects in the series were in the works and that the company is not finished with the creative and financial possibilities of the franchise. “It definitely feels like there are a great many people waiting on the world of NieR,” Saito said at the time.

Towards the end of the panel, Saito made things even more exciting by stating that he believes the team can “open another door in the NieR universe.” Throughout the entire panel, though, was a sense that the designers are immensely proud of their work, showing that AAA games can still have the power to surprise and inspire.
