OnlySP Site Update – October 2nd 2014

17

Hey all,

Site owner Nick Calandra here. Just wanted to get a post out this month giving you an update on the status of OnlySP. It’s been pretty slow the past few months as I’m sure you’re all well aware, but that’s summer for you. This year is a bit odd in terms of gaming coverage as we have a lot of high profile releases this holiday season that are of course being pushed to the front and center over what’s coming out in 2015.

Thus, there’s been a lack of news to cover regarding new game details and such. It’s a usual trend that happens every year, although this year has been a bit harsher in terms of new things to report on. However, there have been some changes to OnlySP over the past few months as a number of us have settled back into college or have moved on to bigger and better things.

You’ve probably noticed by now that our staff numbers have significantly dropped since the end of this summer. Part of that was me cutting down on the number of people we have writing for the site to make sure things are a bit more organized as well as removing those who didn’t post content very often. Others left to pursue different avenues or just wanted a break from gaming journalism.

Our current team right now mainly consists of 4-5 consistent writers and our YouTube channel has taken a bit of a hiatus again until we find another video editor that matches the standard set by Adam for our channel.

I’ll be adding a few new writers here in the near future when I find what I’m looking for, but for the moment you can count on Tripp and I for news, David Nelson for consistent editorial content and Lachlan for all your Editor in Chief needs (as well as interesting travel stories). We’ve got some other writers doing some editing and such as well, but as you can imagine we’re all pretty busy this time of year.

BUT, that doesn’t mean OnlySP has faltered in terms of growth. As it stand rights now, we’re just under 1.6 million visits for the year and we’re shooting to surpass 2 million for the year which means we would have grown 120% in the course of one year which is a huge accomplishment for everyone here at OnlySP. Next year we plan to bring in even higher numbers as we enter our third year of publication.

My ambitions for the site will have to slow down a bit as I tried to manage a bit too much this summer, but you can be sure we’ll be more organized than ever by the start of 2015. If you have any questions for me or the team, be sure to let us know in the comments section or through email and we will be happy to answer. Also be on the lookout for reviews on FIFA 15, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Alien: Isolation and many more games in the coming weeks and months.

Hey everyone, David Nelson dropping in. Nick had me do an edit on this and I couldn’t resist saying a word or two. I’ve done my best to help Nick over the years as this site grew from a tiny corner of the web with a terrible interface (lol) and I can tell you he’s a man you want to stick with. This team may ebb and flow, some may come and go, but OnlySP ONLY gets stronger with every change and lesson learned. We are true believers in high standards of community and interaction; we stand as a team to serve you and serve as a beacon to contrast in full brightness against the darker, flame-filled gaming interwebs where thoughtful discussion of the industry goes to die.

I apologize for not commenting enough with you all in my own editorials and will endeavor to do so more in the coming year even as I take on new responsibilities in my own life. We work hard to foster a positive and trustworthy gaming site, Nick more than anybody, so you can all take part in this vision of a mature and unique site that we want you to have as your homepage, not just a bookmark.

Finally, I’d like to thank you all for participating in discussions on all of our articles. I think I speak for us all when I say it is a pleasure to see a reader interact with our ideas and offer up their own. That is what it’s all about, the readers connecting through a common interest: this crazy and exciting hobby.

  1. Thank you for letting us know all this. Taking up more than a place can handle is never a good idea and definitely not good in the long run. OnlySP has always had a specific enough focus and consistent enough posting that, for me personally, a slower and more focused approach is perfectly fine.

There are sites that post 24/7, sites for news, sites functioning as databases, sites more focused on the editorial side. So choosing what works and aiming for quality over quantity is really a step up when you look at it that way. As long as you’re around and your focus is single player experience, I’m pretty sure most folks will be pleased, regardless of how often you post. :)

    1. Thanks Orion!

Yea it’s become a bit more than I can chew during school considering, well, school work and a social life haha. Don’t really have time to go searching for those little bits of details like usual, but certainly trying to figure out a more acceptable schedule to work on the site as this is my only source of income right now, and little income at that.

  2. Good luck guys! Doing a great job so far =)

  3. Want to throw in a thank you note for you guys (and girls – I assume) hard work. I believe virtual reality is going to lack a social component for quite some time and onlysp could be a good place for future VR coverage, if it ever takes off. I sure hope it does. No Man’s Sky, while not made for VR inherently, is going to be fun to explore in the rift.

  4. Thank you all once again for the hard work! We all really appreciate it!

  5. OnlySP has been awesome Regular news stories have been great. Keep it up!

  6. Your site its on my feddly, so I think you are doing a pretty good work ;)

  7. I’ve only discovered this site towards the middle of this year, and I can’t believe how I’ve not found it before. I’m pretty much the target of this site, exclusively playing single player games, and it was great to find a site that caters for that. So thanks for that, and keep it up, I’m here every day!

  8. I am so glad i found onlySP. i really miss games that focus on a decent story and rely on single player to sell themselves. there are far to many bland online multilayer shooters. Thanks only SP for keeping me up to date and introducing some great games!

  9. I think you guys have been doing a great job with the site so far. I find the things you cover to be interesting and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store. Keep it up and you guys will hit your goal in no time.

  10. We need more ponies on the site :P

  11. keep up the good work..

  12. I only play single player games, so this site really does a good job of giving me game news I would only be interested in.
And it’s always straight to the point in ways I prefer unlike most articles.
I always start my day off with this site first, than reddit r/GameDeals.
    Keep up the good work.

  13. There are millions of gamers who prefer single player games with unique story & game play(including my self). So we guys do need a particular gaming-review site that focuses on Single-player games & you guys are playing that role wonderfully. Keep going>>>>>>>>>

  14. single player games to me are the best no complaining from other so called players xP great website

  15. I appreciate the thoughtful update. I’m sort of a stream of consciousness internet user. I don’t have a lot of strong allegiances when I’m looking for my internet news… that said, I am predominately a single player gamer, so I generally start with a quick google for reviews/news and when I see https://www.onlysp.com I know it’ll be helpful and it gets my click (which at least helps your google ranking I hope).

My twitter feed is the second route that brings me to you periodically. My feed is pretty bloated, but for a review of a game I’m interested I’d rather ADD over to a review here than most other outlets :-)

Do what you have to keep the site focused and enjoyable for you to work on. I don’t think its necessary for every startup game site to try and fulfill ever niche an IGN or a joystiq does. Rather, do what you enjoy doing the most, optimize it so you do it better than everyone else, and carve out your niche :-)

Anyways, keep up the good work!

  16. Only COD & no sp make us a dull gamer (or camper). Today many review sites compare every game with COD & rate it. If it’s not like COD or Halo then 5.9/10.But thanks to OnlySP we have one site that gives review without any manipulation or preference.
