Eight years have passed since Square Enix did anything with action role-playing franchise Parasite Eve, but news that the title of the series has been given a new trademark in Europe has raised hopes among fans.

Parasite Eve was originally released in 1998 for the original PlayStation, where it received high praise from critics for its real-time combat system and high quality cutscenes. The sequel was subsequently released in 2000, incorporated survival horror elements.

A third Parasite Eve title was released on the PlayStation Portable in 2010, but switched out the RPG format in favour of becoming a first-person shooter.

The reveal of the trademark has prompted much speculation. Square Enix has previously worked on adapting its franchises to the mobile and handheld market, including Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy, so Parasite Eve may see an adaption into a mobile title. Other commentators have noted the success of remastered versions of classic 90s franchises such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon and are wondering if Square Enix is planning to head in that direction.

Whatever the result, further developments can be followed by keeping an eye on OnlySP Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
