People Can Fly, the Polish studio behind Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgment, has entered into partnership with Square-Enix to develop a new AAA game.

This new project is described as a “high end original title” in development for PC and console platforms, though no other details are forthcoming at the present time.

Speculation on the announcement has circled the possibility that the studio is working on the third game to emerge from Square-Enix’s deal with Marvel. The first of those will be an Avengers game from Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics, while the second is the rumoured Guardians of the Galaxy project from Deus Ex studio Eidos Montreal. However, the specific mention of “original” in the announcement seems to preclude any likelihood of a Marvel game from People Can Fly.

Unfortunately, further information is unlikely to emerge any time soon with Square-Enix confirming that the game will not appear at E3 later this month. Nevertheless, the publisher is excited about the game, with Lee Singleton, head of Square-Enix London Studios, calling it “the perfect addition to [the publisher’s] portfolio.”

Given the developer’s previous experience, a shooter of some kind is the most likely option, and would certainly fill a gap in Square-Enix’s line-up, which is comprised primarily of RPGs, sprawling action games, and smaller narrative-focused  experiences. This possibility is supported by last year’s revelation that People Can Fly is working on a “big AAA shooter,” as well as another smaller production.

OnlySP’s Michael Urban reviewed the developer’s last full release, Gears of War: Judgment, back in 2013, offering a score of 7.5/10 and calling the game “an enjoyable but completely disposable shooter that just so happens to have an interesting bonus mini-campaign which Gears aficionados will greatly enjoy.”
