Platinum Games, the development team behind Nier: Automata and Bayonetta, is working on a new IP, according to studio producer Atsushi Inaba.

Inaba made the revelation during his keynote at the ongoing BitSummit in Kyoto, Japan today, saying little more than that the project is currently “formless.” He did announce, however, that the studio is working with a new director for the title, which will come as little surprise to fans of the team.

Platinum Games is known for collaborating with external directors for large-scale projects, with Resident Evil 4 and The Evil Within director Shinji Mikami working on Vanquish, Nintendo’s Yugo Hayashi taking the co-lead for Star Fox Zero, and Drakengard creator Yoko Taro taking the helm for the team’s most recent game, Nier: Automata. Unfortunately, Inaba opted not to announce the studio’s new partner, meaning that details of the project cannot even be speculated upon.

In addition to teasing the new game, Inaba mentioned the possibility that the studio may no longer commit to releasing a game each year, allowing for longer development periods. Despite this announcement, the studio is now confirmed to have three games currently in development. In 2018, Platinum Games is scheduled to release Granblue Fantasy Project Re:Link, a PlayStation 4 exclusive RPG based on an anime, and Lost Order, a mobile game, both of which are being co-developed with CyGames.

Until the beginning of this year, the developer was also working on Scalebound, which had been described as a passion project of director Hideki Kamiya, before the project was scuppered by Microsoft for failing to make developmental milestones.

Despite some recent turbulence, Platinum Games remains a team worth paying attention to, and OnlySP will follow the development of all of the studio’s upcoming games. In the meantime, be sure to bookmark OnlySP and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.
