PhiGames and Dear Villagers have dropped the debut gameplay trailer for the upcoming Metroidvania-styled production, Recompile.

The game takes place in a digital world called The Mainframe, with players assuming the role of a pixelated hero. As the trailer reveals, the player will have access to shooting mechanics and a wide array of traversal options for their journey through the glitzy, glitchy landscape.

Details on the storyline are scarce at present, though the developer is promising “a branching narrative system exploring machine intelligence, computational logic, and disastrous ecological consequences.”

The setting and premise bring to mind nothing so much as William Gibson’s seminal cyberpunk novel Neuromancer, while the look of Recompile is perhaps most reminiscent of Housemarque’s arcade-styled offerings.
