The announcement that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be an Xbox exclusive yesterday left a sour taste in many gamers who had played the previous installment on other platforms. The wording during the conference was a bit sketchy, and many people picked up on the specific words that were used leading many to believe this would be another timed exclusive for Microsoft.
Phil Spencer has confirmed to Eurogamer today that Microsoft’s deal with Square Enix does indeed have a duration and that Microsoft did not buy the Tomb Raider IP. While he couldn’t discuss the super specifics of the deal, he did make sure to note that Square Enix does control full rights to the Tomb Raider IP and are free to do what they will with it once the duration of the exclusivity deal ends.
The situation we have here is quite similar to what’s recently happened with Dead Rising 3 and Ryse both ending up on different platforms, via the PC. Neither of those titles have been confirmed for a PS4 release at this time, so it’ll be interesting to see if and when they ever do. The same situation may happen with Rise of the Tomb Raider and due to Square Enix’s lust for heavy sales, it wouldn’t be all that surprising.
Here’s what Phil Spencer had to say to Eurogamer about the subject:
“When people want me to say, can you tell us when or if it’s coming to other platforms, it’s not my job,” Spencer told Eurogamer. “My job is not to talk about games I don’t own. I have a certain relationship on this version of Tomb Raider, which we announced, and I feel really good about our long term relationship with Crystal and Square.
“I get the reaction I see. If I’m a PlayStation person all of a sudden I feel like, the franchise has gone. I didn’t buy the IP. I didn’t buy the studio. It’s not mine. Where this thing will go over time, just like Dead Rising or Ryse, we’ll see what happens with the game. I don’t own every iteration of Tomb Raider.
“I don’t own them building Tomb Raider on other platforms. I can’t talk about the franchise that way. I can talk about the deal I have.”
