Rumor: 2017’s Assassin’s Creed to Include RPG Structure

Assassin’s Creed, the iconic parkour-inspired stealth-combat series sporting in-depth historical fiction, is rumored to return in 2017 after breaking its annual release cycle in 2016.

After the last two titles in the series—Unity and Syndicate—did relatively poorly in comparison to the franchise’s previous titles, Ubisoft decided to take a break from producing Assassin’s Creed games in favor of supporting the debut film of the same name. With E3 lurking ever-closer, rumors that the next installment are picking up speed. Originally, rumors suggested the working title for the new game was Assassin’s Creed: Empire. However, further leaks have suggested the final title is Assassin’s Creed Origins.

As the name implies, the story of Origins is rumored to involve the original assassin’s guild within the brotherhood. In addition, speculation points in the direction of two main characters, a man and a woman—similar to the protagonists in Syndicate.

If the possibility of an imminent return of an Assassin’s Creed game is not exciting enough, sources also claim the game’s structure will be similar to that of Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, “featuring a character progression system less tied to the story.”

Similar to previous titles, exploration will be a central component to Origins. However, exploration is said to be much more heavily emphasized than in previous titles, and Origins is “the biggest Assassin’s Creed the company has ever created.” Moreover, not only is ancient Egypt at the core of Origins’s content, but rumors claim that players will be able to venture beyond Egypt—perhaps to Greece.

Playing off the success of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, sailing and naval combat are said to be returning in Origins.

So far, Ubisoft has yet to confirm or deny any of the rumors, but fans and sources alike will be clamoring for more information, especially at E3 2017 this June.

No specific release date for Origins has been announced, but expected release is in fall 2017.

Layers of Fear 2 Launching Late Next Month

Layers of Fear 2

Layers of Fear 2 has been talked about for a while now and is finally coming late next month.

Announced today by publisher Gun Media, the sequel to the psychological romp through artistic ego Layers of Fear is set to launch May 28 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Gameplay-wise, the sequel looks to cover similar ground as its predecessor. As a first-person psychological horror with “an emphasis on exploration and story,” players meander through heavily-scripted set-pieces while solving puzzles and being scared a whole lot.

Layers of Fear 2, though, will be swapping the paintbrush for the dizzying heights of Hollywood. According to the game’s Steam synopsis, players “control a Hollywood actor who heeds the call of an enigmatic director to take on the lead role in a film shot aboard an ocean liner.”

Stifled by their own acting ambitions, the protagonist finds themselves alone and marooned on an increasingly nightmarish boat. The game’s unnamed protagonist must navigate their own past and the challenges the director sets them to unlock the secret to not just the film they are starring in, but their own motivations.

The original Layers of Fear was a captivating take on modern, story-driven horror, so the sequel’s inventive premise and greater scope are welcomed. While the sequel is embarking to a radically different setting, the title looks likely to recapture the original’s claustrophobic, atmospheric level design.
