Disintegration aims to stand apart from the FPS crowd with a lighter tone reminiscent of Joss Whedon’s cult classic TV series Firefly.

The game’s director (and former Halo co-creator) Marcus Lehto made the comparison in a recent interview with the PlayStation Blog.

The comment was made in reference to the humour shown in the debut trailer (embedded below), but reflects the general thrust of character interactions:

“I wanted them to behave like normal humans, with a variety of different backgrounds and opposing views… we want that more complex nature to show when it comes to their banter and their interactions.”

Disintegration takes place on a future Earth ravaged by some calamity that results in humans implanting their brains into robotic exoskeletons. Players take the role of a resistance fighter named Romer Shoal struggling against the aggressive Rayonne, who want to make the change to post-humanity permanent.

The game fuses typical FPS gameplay with a real-time tactics element that has players giving orders and commanding units across large battlefields. A handful of details of how that works is available here.

Disintegration is set to launch next year on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
