Sea of Solitude, the debut title from Jo-Mei Games, has been confirmed as the second EA Original, an indie cultivation program announced at E3 2016.
Originally announced at the beginning of 2015, Sea of Solitude is an adventure game set in an alternate world in which humans transform into monsters if they become too lonely. The game follows Kay, a girl who has succumbed to this fate and seeks a way to reverse the curse. In doing so, she must face off against other monsters that populate the world and a mysterious something that is “way more dangerous.”
Aside from these scant fragments of story, few details of the title have been revealed, though the gameplay will centre on exploration and puzzle solving, with some action elements also included. All of this will take place in a largely aquatic game world, fittingly portrayed with an almost ethereal watercolour aesthetic.
In making the announcement of the game as a freshly-minted EA Original, EA’s Executive Vice President, Patrick Söderlund said, “The story of Sea of Solitude is unique and important. It is both beautiful and terrifying at the same time.”
Despite its early announcement, the developers at Jo-Mei Games have offered only glimpses of Sea of Solitude thus far, with the most in-depth being an interview with Youtube personality Anthony Carboni earlier this year.
The only other game so far announced as an EA Original is Fe, a similarly haunting title that focuses on the relationships between all living things. The program follows in the wake of the critical success of EA’s 2015 title Unravel and is intended as a means of bringing attention and funding to indie developers that may not otherwise be able to deliver their games to the public.
So far, the EA Originals initiative is making the right noises, and OnlySP will continue to cover what it has to offer.
